Boosting Cycling to School

Once again, we are excited to announce our ‘Bikeability Plus’ projects team will be working with a cluster of primary schools in Cambridgeshire to help increase the level of cycling to school and make active travel the smart choice for pupils, parents and school staff within the community.

Thanks to funding secured by Cambridgeshire County Council, Outspoken Training will be working with 4 schools in St Neots who will enjoy the fun, thrills and excitement of the ‘whole school’ cycling initiative.  The schools involved are:

  • Eynesbury
  • Bushmead
  • Little Paxton
  • St Marys

The project kicks off with a full day ‘Cycle Try-Out’ show at each school during w/c 4th June, giving each class time to enjoy riding a mixture of cycles such as tandems, trikes, cargo bikes and some very unusual bikes too. The pedal-powered jukebox will add to the atmosphere and the fun will carry on after school for parents to get involved too.

The launch will be followed by 4 weeks of cycle training and activities designed to encourage more pupils to cycle to school. These will include balance bike training for reception class, learn to ride lessons for non-riders and cycle maintenance sessions for those wanting to learn how to make basic adjustments and deal with the dreaded flat tyre.

Stuart Meadows (Head of Instructor Development) from Outspoken said:

“We are really excited to be bringing ‘Bikeability Plus’ to St Neots, and we know from previous projects what a fantastic time the children, families and teachers will have. Our aim is to enthuse the children and parents to be more active and reduce the levels of congestion around the school gates by choosing to cycle to school. The activities on offer will help many pupils learn to ride for the first time and equip others with the skills and confidence to keep their cycles in good shape.”

Previous projects have resulted in increases of up to 279% in the number of children and parents cycling to school and helped create a culture of cycling within the schools and local community.

Outspoken Training are looking for enthusiastic and inspirational individuals to help deliver Bikeability cycle training and other cycling programmes within Bedfordshire, Cambridgeshire, Lincolnshire, Northamptonshire and Suffolk. For more information, please visit our recruitment page.
