Independence by Bicycle

The weather may have been cold during January but it didn’t stop some of the Key Stage 3 pupils from Longsands Academy in St.Neots completing their Bikeability Level 3 training.

The Academy took advantage of Cambridgeshire County Council funding for Level 3 training for the first time, with the aims of improving the knowledge, skills and confidence of pupils who regularly cycle to school. Suzy Alder, KS3 Support Officer, organised the groups of excited trainees and was impressed with the outcome:

“The instructors, Steve and Stuart, were knowledgeable and very professional in their approach to teaching the students complex road scenarios. All students gained valuable experience and broadened their abilities as level 2/3 cyclists”

Level 3 training aims to prepare the trainees for making longer, independent journeys which involve more complex junctions and cycling on roads with high levels of traffic. The pre-planned routes included a trip up and down the busy high street in St.Neots and from the pupils' feedback it was clear the trainees had enjoyed their experience;

"I enjoyed the training and now feel more confident about biking safely on the road" - Ami Quenby, Year 7

"The training was exciting and very helpful to learn how to keep safe on the roads" - Luke Meakins, Year 7

"It was fun on the busy roads. I felt much more confident at the end of the course and am looking forward to doing some more training soon" - Annie Boden, Year 7

The Outspoken National Standard Instructors enjoyed the challenge too and were keen to reflect on how well the trainees had performed;

“I was so impressed with the positive attitude of the young cyclists, despite the poor weather. Each trainee made excellent progress through the Level 3 outcomes and demonstrated great awareness, observation and decision making, resulting in excellent independent riding. The challenging environment took them out of their comfort zone but they handled it so well, building confidence all the way” – Stuart Meadows

Congratulations to the pupils at Longsands Academy, we all hope you continue to enjoy your cycling on the streets of St. Neots.
