Qualities Needed to be a National Standard Cycle Instructor

Creative, Enthusiastic, and Fun -  according to the latest group of NSI trainees these are three of the most important qualities needed to be an excellent instructor, and they’re right! Even better, they have them all!

Having recently attended a 4-day National Standards Instructor course in Lincoln the brand new NSIP’s are now looking forward to delivering Bikeability to children for both Lincolnshire County Council and Nottinghamshire County Council.

During the course the trainees were challenged to create fun ways to deliver the Level 1 outcomes and they didn’t hold back! Game based drills using a variety of props were in full action resulting in lots of fun for everyone involved whilst also creating fresh ideas and methods in how to achieve the outcomes.

With a mixture of practical and theory sessions each day the trainees learnt about the 3 Bikeability Levels and the underpinning principles set for teaching them. Adding to this knowledge was shared on topics such as safeguarding, risk management, site selection and session planning.

Feedback from the trainees reflected their enjoyment:

  • “Really appreciate the fun and energy that the instructors gave to each and every area”
  • “Nick and Stuart were excellent trainers. We had such such a good time learning from them”
  • “Excellent trainers, very friendly, very knowledgeable, very encouraging when I was a little nervous at the start of the course”.
